Pretty Cool Idea

I really liked this idea and apparently Linus TORVALDS thinks it is pretty cool too.

Basically someone has come up with a way of packaging up an application and all its dependencies in a single file allowing you to run the same application on multiple different versions of Linux without having to be recompile it yourself or waiting it to be packaged and released for your distribution.

I really like the idea of having a portable application but as each application is distributed with all its dependencies it does have the obvious down side of making the application much larger.

As ever there are advantages and disadvantages, security might be a concern for some people but I can see this is being a convenient and really useful way to distribute some applications, particularly if you simply must have the latest version.
